written by John C. McDowell

softcover (224 pages)

Westminster John Knox Press

ISBN 978-0-6642-6283-9

$ 18.00

In a new and updated version of this best-selling book, John McDowell explores the many spiritual themes that weave throughout the Star Wars films. From the Force to the dark side, the issues discussed in the films have a moral and spiritual complexity that, if paid attention to, can help us better understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to God. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, did not intend for his films to be mere entertainment, McDowell argues. Rather, he hoped his films would be used as a vehicle for moral education.

This new version has been thoroughly revised to include discussion of The Force Awakens and other new developments in the Star Wars universe.

STAR WARS AND THE HISTORY OF TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING

softcover (non-licensed) (Dutch)

publisher info:

edited by Sean Guynes & Dan Hassler-Forest

softcover (280 pages)

(also available as an open access download)

Amsterdam University Press (AUP)

ISBN 978-9-4629-8621-3

€ 39.95

solicitation copy:

Star Wars has reached more than three generations of casual and hardcore fans alike, and as a result many of the producers of franchised Star Wars texts (films, television, comics, novels, games, and more) over the past four decades have been fans-turned-creators. Yet despite its dominant cultural and industrial positions, Star Wars has rarely been the topic of sustained critical work. Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling offers a corrective to this oversight by curating essays from a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars in order to bring Star Wars and its transmedia narratives more fully into the fold of media and cultural studies.

The collection places Star Wars at the center of those studies’ projects by examining video games, novels and novelizations, comics, advertising practices, television shows, franchising models, aesthetic and economic decisions, fandom and cultural responses, and other aspects of Star Wars and its world-building in their multiple contexts of production, distribution, and reception. In emphasizing that Star Wars is both a media franchise and a transmedia storyworld, Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling demonstrates the ways in which transmedia storytelling and the industrial logic of media franchising have developed in concert over the past four decades, as multinational corporations have become the central means for subsidizing, profiting from, and selling modes of immersive storyworlds to global audiences. By taking this dual approach, the book focuses on the interconnected nature of corporate production, fan consumption, and transmedia world-building. As such, this collection grapples with the historical, cultural, aesthetic, and political-economic implications of the relationship between media franchising and transmedia storytelling as they are seen at work in the world’s most profitable transmedia franchise.

written by Carrie Fisher

softcover (272 pages)

Blue Rider Press

ISBN 978-0-399-18579-3

$ 16.00

solicitation copy:

The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher’s intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Wars movie.   * Named a PEOPLE Magazine Best Book of Fall 2016  *A New York Times Bestseller *

When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved—plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a teenager with an all-consuming crush on her costar, Harrison Ford.

With these excerpts from her handwritten notebooks, The Princess Diarist is Fisher’s intimate and revealing recollection of what happened on one of the most famous film sets of all time—and what developed behind the scenes.  Fisher also ponders the joys and insanity of celebrity, and the absurdity of a life spawned by Hollywood royalty, only to be surpassed by her own outer-space royalty. Laugh-out-loud hilarious and endlessly quotable, The Princess Diarist brims with the candor and introspection of a diary while offering shrewd insight into the type of stardom that few will ever experience.

STAR WARS: THE REBEL FILES

part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi publishing program

deluxe hardcover (US)

publisher info:

written by Daniel Wallace

hardcover

becker&mayer!

ISBN 978-0-7603-5545-9

$ 99.99

from author Daniel Wallace:

It has a scrapbooky feel told with in-universe docs. Reveals Alliance history from Rebels-ROTJ and is basically a huge Mon Mothma jam.

from author Daniel Wallace at TFN:

It goes right up to ROTJ, which is part of the in-universe conceit behind the whole project (which will make more sense once you have a chance to read it).

Like the earlier ones (The Jedi Path, etc.), the main text is set in a particular time period and then the marginal annotations/scribbles are from later commentators. In this case, the comments are from the TFA/TLJ timeframe and include one TLJ character, and the main text has some retroactive references to things you’ll see in TLJ.

Both Ackbar and Raddus have bits in this, but since the book’s entire narrative history is told through in-universe documents, some of the Rebel Alliance backstory is relayed in a between-the-lines sort of way. If that makes sense. There’s a decent amount of ambiguity here and there, but hopefully there’s still plenty of flavor.

solicitation copy:

This top-secret cache reproduces highly sensitive intelligence that traces the Rebel Alliance from its formation through its tireless fight against the Empire. From its earliest beginnings in covert opposition to Imperial operations, the Alliance could not trust its most sensitive information to risk of digital interception. Instead, it was kept in a secure case, traveling with key senior Rebel personnel. Lost in the chaos surrounding the Battle of Endor, it was rediscovered many years later by the newly formed Resistance.

Richly illustrated and full of strategic detail and history, the files also feature additional annotation by Resistance members such as General Leia Organa, Mon Mothma, Poe Dameron, and Admiral Ackbar, making this a crucial read for fans seeking a deeper understanding of the saga.

Almost as soon as there were Star Wars films, there were Star Wars novels. Alan Dean Foster got the ball rolling, ghost-writing the first film’s adaptation for George Lucas, as well as penning a sequel, Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. Novels covering the exploits of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian soon followed, ushering in what would come to be called the Star WarsExpanded Universe. The E.U., like the Force itself, has helped to bind the galaxy together.

More than 250 Star Wars novels have been published by Del Rey, Bantam Books, Ballantine Books, and other companies, aimed at both young and adult readers. Spanning the decades before, during, and after the films’ events, the books have spawned new galactic governments, explored the nature of the Jedi and the Sith, and developed the Star Warsmythos well beyond merely a series of films and television shows. The Expanded Universe — recently re-branded as “Legends” following Disney’s acquisition of the franchise — has grown exponentially, comprising not only the books but also comics, video games, radio shows, role-playing games, and more.

With A More Civilized Age: Exploring the Star Wars Expanded Universe, editors Rich Handley and Joseph F. Berenato continue their look back at the franchise’s highs and lows, which began with A Long Time Ago: Exploring the Star Wars Cinematic Universe and A Galaxy Far, Far Away: Exploring Star Wars Comics. This third volume offers insightful, analytical essays examining the Star Wars E.U., contributed by popular film historians, novelists, bloggers, and subject-matter experts — including fan-favorite Star Wars novelists Timothy Zahn and Ryder Windham. The films were just the beginning. Find out how the universe expanded.

STAR WARS MEMORABILIA: AN UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO STAR WARS COLLECTABLES

softcover (non-licensed) (UK)

publisher info:

written by Paul Berry

softcover (94 pages)

Amberley Publishing

ISBN 978-1-44567-644-9

£ 14.99

solicitation copy:

Star Wars first debuted on movie screens in 1977 and over the past forty years has grown into a merchandising phenomenon unequalled both in breadth and range. It has generated more collectables than any other movie series in history. From inexpensive pocket money toys to big ticket full-size replicas, it has spanned every area of licensed product.

From inauspicious beginnings, Paul Berry charts the development of the Star Wars collectable from the Original Trilogy era of the 1970s and 1980s, the prequels of the 1990s and 2000s and the modern era of films. This book looks at the massive success of the Kenner, and later Hasbro, action figure range, which has spawned well over 1,000 figures; the story of the books and comics that have greatly expanded the Star Wars universe; the records and the videos; the bubblegum cards; and the modern collectors items.

Whether you joined the Star Wars saga in 1977, 1999 or 2015, Star Wars is a hobby that continues to attract new generations of collectors and will likely endure for many decades to come.
