THE EMPIRE STRIKES BOOK
50 Years of Drawings Inspired by the Star Wars Universe

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written and illustrated by Joseph Ari Aloi
Blurring Books
hardcover (500 pages)
ISBN 978-1963814262
$ 60.00

solicitation copy:

The Empire Strikes Book is a 500-page book gathers the full arc of a lifelong fascination—drawings and works born from the Star Wars universe. The book begins with the artist’s earliest, childhood sketches at age seven in 1977, when the first film detonated the imaginations of viewers across the world. JK5’s work is organized by year and provides a visual progression of his skill, style formation, and infatuation with the franchise. The Empire Strikes Book is a visual feast that is chock-full of fan-favorite characters reimagined in JK5’s unique style.

“I drew obsessively through the original trilogy years. In 1994, during my senior year at the Rhode Island School of Design, I felt the desert winds of the ‘Dune Sea’ calling me back. That autumn, as I began tattooing in earnest, I adopted JK5 as my nom de plume (Jedi Knight, Red 5), and the visual grammar of Star Wars evolved into a parallel mythology—part homage, part catalyst. It became a lens through which I explored identity, expression, and the construction of my own personal cosmology. This work is the record of that journey.” – JK5

THE ART OF STAR WARS: ANDOR

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written by Phil Szostak
foreword by Tony Gilroy
cover by Chester Carr
Abrams Books
hardcover (272 pages)
ISBN 978-1-4197-7568-0
$ 50.00

solicitation copy:

The official behind-the-scenes companion to the Emmy, WGA, SAG, Golden Globe, and BAFTA–Award nominated Disney+ series

The Art of Star Wars: Andor (The Complete Series) gives readers an exclusive inside look at the production art, visual development, concept art, creature designs and FX, graphics, props, and more that went into creating the Tony Gilroy helmed Disney+ series.

Through extensive interviews with Gilroy, star Diego Luna, and the talented Lucasfilm visualists, author Phil Szostak documents every step of Andor’s production from discussions following the initial release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story up through post-production on the final episodes of season two.

With deep dives into the locations that defined the series, including Kenari, Ferrix, Aldhani, Narkina 5, Mina-Rau, Ghorman, and Yavin 4, among many others, this essential volume celebrates the legacy of all twenty-four critically acclaimed episodes and the hurdles the filmmakers, cast, and crew had to overcome to bring their vision to life.

Every facet and detail of the Rebellion and Empire’s inner workings and the day-to-day existence within the world of Star Wars that Andor lovingly depicted are explored in great detail along with reflections on the series overall and its espionage roots and political relevance. The lived-in, battered costumes, ships, and locales that are so crucial to the DNA of Star Wars are on full display in this volume alongside the elegant formalism of the Galactic Senate and Coruscant.

Every piece of concept art—from ISB uniforms to Ferrix workwear to sleek speeders to the sterile prison cells of Narkina 5—has a tactility that leaps off the page. Cassian Andor’s journey from thief to spy to rebel to martyr, and the stories of his allies, uneasy partnerships, Imperial schemes, and galactic revolution took audiences on an emotionally resonant adventure and The Art of Star Wars: Andor spotlights the exceptional work that made it all possible.

A history of the dark times

“So this is how liberty dies—with thunderous applause.”
-Senator Padmé Amidala

When Palpatine declared the birth of his new Empire, he expected it would stand for millennia. Instead, it lasted only 24 years. This is the story of how a tyrannical regime rose from the ashes of democracy, ruled the galaxy with an iron fist, and then collapsed into dust.

It is a story of war and heroes, of the power of propaganda and the dangers of complacency. But most of all, it is a story of normal people trying to live their lives in the face of a brutal dictatorship.

From the ruthlessness of Darth Vader’s campaigns to the horrors of the Tarkin Initiative, this book offers fresh new insights into the dark entity at the core of Star Wars.

A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE
Making Space for Race in Star Wars

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written by Frederick Gooding Jr.
Bloomsbury Academic
hardcover (176 pages)
$ 36.00

solicitation copy:

A necessary exploration of the role that race plays in one of the biggest film franchises of all time: Star Wars.

Talking about race can be so incredibly awkward at times – but it does not have to be! Often, many restrict themselves from fully participating in these necessary dialogues only because of a profound fear of “saying the wrong thing.” Thus, this book conducts a racial analysis of the world famous franchise, Star Wars.

A Disturbance in the Force: Making Space for Race in Star Wars helps readers understand how race is leveraged within an idealistic fantasy space that theoretically should be unencumbered by any racial frictions that we know within our current society, seeing how the events that transpire within the nine Star Wars franchise movies occurred “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Yet, beneath the hyperspace drives to distant locations featuring a vast array of alien diversity co-existing with humans intergalactically, tensions and assumptions surrounding race relations within contemporary mainstream America nonetheless are manifest and present. This book will reveal such racial tensions “hidden in plain sight,” employing satire in modest dosages to help alleviate some of this tension.

Gooding Jr. asks readers to reconsider and think critically about both the quantity and quality of nonwhite images circulated throughout the Star Wars universe. By focusing on Star Wars, one key barrier to constructive conversations about race is removed by focusing on a commonly known product to serve as a common denominator. When it comes to the relationship of race relations and Star Wars, there is no need for me to “force” the issue. Readers will learn and appreciate upon concluding that similar to the force, the topic of race is also an “energy between all things, a tension, a balance that binds” us together, whether for better or for worse.
