STAR WARS (BFI FILM CLASSICS)

Second Edition

softcover (UK)

publisher info:

written by Will Brooker

softcover (104 pages)

British Film Institute

ISBN 978-1-8390-2163-3
£ 11.99

solicitation copy:

The release of Star Wars in 1977 marked the start of what would become a colossal global franchise. Star Wars remains the second highest-grossing film in the United States, and George Lucas’s six-part narrative has grown into something more: a culture that goes far beyond the films themselves, with tie-in toys, novels, comics, games and DVDs as well as an enthusiastic fan community which creates its own Star Wars fictions. Critical studies of Star Wars have treated it as a cultural phenomenon, or in terms of its special effects, fans and merchandising, or as a film that marked the end of New Hollywood’s innovation and the birth of the blockbuster.

Will Brooker’s illuminating study of the film takes issue with many of these commonly-held ideas about Star Wars. He provides a close analysis of Star Wars as a film, carefully examining its shots, editing, sound design, cinematography and performances. Placing the film in the context of George Lucas’s previous work, from his student shorts to his 1970s features, and the diverse influences that shaped his approach, from John Ford to Jean-Luc Godard, Brooker argues that Star Wars is not, as Lucas himself has claimed, a departure from his earlier cinema, but a continuation of his experiments with sound and image. He reveals Lucas’s contradictory desires for total order and control, embodied by the Empire, and for the raw energy and creative improvisation of the Rebels. What seemed a simple fairy-tale becomes far more complex when we realise that the director is rooting for both sides; and this tension unsettles the saga as a whole, blurring the boundaries between Empire and Republic, dark side and light side, father and son.

In his foreword to this new edition, Will Brooker discusses is how subsequent films in the series, specifically Rogue One (2016) and The Last Jedi (2017), foregrounded and developed the themes of opposition that are at the heart of Star Wars. He shows how Derridean theories of opposites which become undermined and subverted, and which change places are made more clear with hindsight and provide us with a useful lens for looking back at the 1977 Star Wars.

BFI FILM CLASSICS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

softcover (UK)

publisher info:

written by Rebecca Harrison
softcover (120 pages)
British Film Istitute
ISBN 978-1-9112-3997-0
£ 11.99 / $15.95

solicitation copy:

The Empire Strikes Back (1980), the second film in the original Star Wars trilogy, is often cited as the best and most popular Star Wars movie. In her compelling study, Rebecca Harrison draws on previously unpublished archival research to reveal a variety of original and often surprising perspectives on the film, from the cast and crew who worked on its production through to the audiences who watched it in cinemas.

Harrison guides readers on a journey that begins with the films production in 1979 and ends with a discussion about its contemporary status as an object of reverence and nostalgia. She demonstrates how Empires meaning and significance has continually shifted over the past 40 years not only within the franchise, but also in broader conversations about film authorship, genre, and identity.

Offering new insights and original analysis of Empire via its cultural context, production history, textual analysis, exhibition, reception, and post-1980 re-evaluations of the film, the book provides a timely and relevant reassessment of this enduringly popular film.

I AM C-3PO: THE INSIDE STORY

softcover reprint of the November 2, 2019 hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

by Anthony Daniels

foreword by J.J. Abrams

DK Publishing

hardcover (256 pages)

ISBN 978-1-4654-9826-7

$ 16.99

solicitation copy:

“Gloriously witty, keen and spirited J.J. Abrams, Director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

“The odds of me ever writing a book were approximately… Oh, never mind. My golden companion worries about such things – I don’t. I have indeed now written a book – telling my story, in my voice, not his – recognising that our voices and our stories are inextricably intertwined.”

When Star Wars burst on to the big screen in 1977, an unfailingly polite golden droid called C-3PO captured imaginations around the globe. But C-3PO wasn’t an amazing display of animatronics with a unique and unforgettable voiceover. Inside the metal costume was an actor named Anthony Daniels.

In this deeply personal memoir, Anthony Daniels recounts his experiences of the epic cinematic adventure that has influenced pop culture for more than 40 years. For the very first time, he candidly describes his most intimate memories as the only actor to appear in every Star Wars film – from his first meeting with George Lucas to the final, emotional days on the set of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

With a foreword by J.J. Abrams and never-before-seen photography, this book is a nostalgic look back at the Skywalker saga as it comes to a close. I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story reveals Anthony Daniels‘ vulnerability, how he established his role and what he accomplished, and takes readers on a journey that just happens to start in a galaxy far, far away.

STAR WARS: THE TRIUMPH OF NERD CULTURE

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written by Josef Benson

hardcover (224 pages)

Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

ISBN 978-1-5381-1620-3

$ 35.00

solicitation copy:

Star Wars: The Triumph of Nerd Culture engagingly reveals how the most popular film franchise of all time sprang from the mind of a deeply insecure nerd, who then inspired and betrayed a generation of fans.

Josef Benson offers an unauthorized and provocative expose of the Star Wars franchise, fueled by George Lucas’s insecurities and the vengefulness of a fervent fan-base who felt betrayed when Lucas defiled the original films. Benson presents the conflict between George Lucas and Star Wars fans as comparable to the twisted relationship between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Just as there is a riveting saga within the Star Wars universe that centers on the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the redemption of Darth Vader, so too has a saga unfolded in relation to George Lucas and Star Wars fandom.

Star Wars fans both love and hate Star Wars and George Lucas, he is equally responsible for their pleasure and pain. Star Wars: Triumph of Nerd Culture delves deeper into the Star Wars universe than any book has gone before. Providing a must-read for Star Wars fans and sending readers away able to watch Star Wars in the same way again.

CARRIE FISHER: A LIFE ON THE EDGE

paperback reprint of the November 12, 2019 hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written by Sheila Weller

paperback (432 pages)

Picador

ISBN 978-1-2507-5825-5

$ 17.99

solicitation copy:

A remarkably candid biography of the remarkably candid―and brilliant―Carrie Fisher

In her 2008 bestseller, Girls Like Us, Sheila Weller―with heart and a profound feeling for the times―gave us a surprisingly intimate portrait of three icons: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. Now she turns her focus to one of the most loved, brilliant, and iconoclastic women of our time: the actress, writer, daughter, and mother Carrie Fisher.

Weller traces Fisher’s life from her Hollywood royalty roots to her untimely and shattering death after Christmas 2016. Her mother was the spunky and adorable Debbie Reynolds; her father, the heartthrob crooner Eddie Fisher. When Eddie ran off with Elizabeth Taylor, the scandal thrust little Carrie Frances into a bizarre spotlight, gifting her with an irony and an aplomb that would resonate throughout her life.

We follow Fisher’s acting career, from her debut in Shampoo, the hit movie that defined mid-1970s Hollywood, to her seizing of the plum female role in Star Wars, which catapulted her to instant fame. We explore her long, complex relationship with Paul Simon and her relatively peaceful years with the talent agent Bryan Lourd. We witness her startling leap―on the heels of a near-fatal overdose―from actress to highly praised, bestselling author, the Dorothy Parker of her place and time.

Weller sympathetically reveals the conditions that Fisher lived with: serious bipolar disorder and an inherited drug addiction. Still, despite crises and overdoses, her life’s work―as an actor, a novelist and memoirist, a script doctor, a hostess, and a friend―was prodigious and unique. As one of her best friends said, “I almost wish the expression ‘one of a kind’ didn’t exist, because it applies to Carrie in a deeper way than it applies to others.”

Sourced by friends, colleagues, and witnesses to all stages of Fisher’s life, Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge is an empathic and even-handed portrayal of a woman who―as Princess Leia, but mostly as herself―was a feminist heroine, one who died at a time when we need her blazing, healing honesty more than ever.

solicitation copy:

Star Wars exploded onto our cinema screens in 1977, and the world has not been the same since. After watching depressing and cynical movies throughout the early 1970s, audiences enthusiastically embraced the positive energy of the Star Wars galaxy as they followed moisture farmer Luke Skywalker on his journey through a galaxy far, far away, meeting extraordinary characters like mysterious hermit Obi-Wan Kenobi, space pirates Han Solo and Chewbacca, loyal droids C-3PO and R2-D2, bold Princess Leia and the horrific Darth Vader, servant of the dark, malevolent Emperor.

Writer, director, and producer George Lucas created the modern monomyth of our time, one that resonates with the child in us all. He formed Industrial Light & Magic to develop cutting-edge special effects technology, which he combined with innovative editing techniques and a heightened sense of sound to give audiences a unique sensory cinematic experience.

In this first volume, made with the full cooperation of Lucasfilm, Lucas narrates his own story, taking us through the making of the original trilogy—Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi—and bringing fresh insights into the creation of a unique universe. Complete with script pages, production documents, concept art, storyboards, on-set photography, stills, and posters, this is the authoritative exploration of the original saga as told by its creator.

THE TRANSMEDIA FRANCHISE OF STAR WARS TV

hardcover (UK)

publisher info:

edited by Dominic J. Nardi & Derek R. Sweet

hardcover (208 pages)

Palgrave Macmillan

ISBN: 978-3-030-52957-4

$ 119.99 / £ 89.99

solicitation copy:

While previous work on the Star Wars universe charts the Campbellian mythic arcs, political representations, and fan reactions associated with the films, this volume takes a transmedial approach to the material, recognizing that Star Wars TV projects interact with and relate to other Star Wars texts. The chapters in this volume take as a basic premise that the televisual entrants into the Star Wars transmedia storyworld are both important texts in the history of popular culture and also key to understanding how the Star Wars franchise―and, thus, industry-wide transmedia storytelling strategies―developed. The book expands previous work to consider television studies and sharp cultural criticism together in an effort to bring both long-running popular series, long-ignored texts, and even toy commercials to bear on the franchise’s complex history.

INTERPRETING STAR WARS

Reading a Modern Film Franchise

hardcover / softcover (UK)

publisher info:

written by Miles Booy

hardcover (208 pages) / softcover (208 pages)

Bloomsbury Academic

ISBN hardcover: 978-1-5013-6475-4

ISBN softcover 978-1-5013-6474-7
hardcover: $ 90.00 / £ 65.00
softcover: $ 26.95 / £ 19.99

solicitation copy:

Upon its initial release in 1977, many critics regarded Star Wars as a childish retort to the mature American cinema of the seventies. Though full of sound and fury, some felt that it signified nothing. Four decades later, the significations are multiple as interpretations of the film’s strange imagery and metaphoric potential continue to pile up.

Interpreting Star Wars analyses and contextualises the dominant trends in Star Wars interpretation from the earliest reviews, through Lucasfilm’s attempts to use its position as copyright holder to promote a single meaning, to the 21st century where the internet has rendered such authorial control impossible and new entries to the canon present new twists on old hopes.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI: GEORGE LUCAS, THE NEW HOLLYWOOD AND THE BABY BOOM GENERATION

Cinema and Youth Cultures

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

written by Peter Kramer

hardcover (112 pages)

Routledge

ISBN 978-1-1386-8191-0

$ 60.00

solicitation copy:

Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, Peter Kramer explains how American Graffiti came into existence, paying close attention to the small-town upbringing and previous films of its director George Lucas. The book also explores the film’s story, style and themes; its marketing, critical reception, commercial success and cultural impact in the United States; and relates all of this both to the transformation of American cinema in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and to the impact of the postwar baby-boom on American culture and society.

about the Cinema and Youth Cultures-series:

Cinema and Youth Cultures engages with well-known youth films from American cinema as well the cinemas of other countries. Using a variety of methodological and critical approaches the series volumes provide informed accounts of how young people have been represented in film, while also exploring the ways in which young people engage with films made for and about them. In doing this, the Cinema and Youth Cultures series contributes to important and long standing debates about youth cultures, how these are mobilized and articulated in influential film texts and the impact that these texts have had on popular culture at large.

Star Wars may have started out as a film about a Manichean battle between good and evil, but as countless filmmakers, novelists, animators, fan artists and even cosplayers have taken the opportunity to play in the fictional world George Lucas created, it has expanded into something far greater, resulting in a richly layered and diverse Star Wars multiverse.

Drawing from a full range of Star Wars media, including comics, children’s books, fan films, and television shows like Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, Carmelo Esterrich explores how these stories set in a galaxy far far away reflect issues that hit closer to home. He examines what they have to say about political oppression, authoritarianism, colonialism, discrimination, xenophobia, and perpetual war. Yet he also investigates subtler ways in which the personal is political within the multiverse, including its articulations of gender and sexuality, its cultural hierarchies of language use, and its complex relationships between humans, droids and myriad species. This book demonstrates that the Star Wars multiverse is not just a stage for thrilling interstellar battles, but also an exciting space for interpretation and discovery.
