ISBN 978-1-9788-1525-4
$ 17.95

solicitation copy:

Star Wars may have started out as a film about a Manichean battle between good and evil, but as countless filmmakers, novelists, animators, fan artists and even cosplayers have taken the opportunity to play in the fictional world George Lucas created, it has expanded into something far greater, resulting in a richly layered and diverse Star Wars multiverse.

Drawing from a full range of Star Wars media, including comics, children’s books, fan films, and television shows like Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, Carmelo Esterrich explores how these stories set in a galaxy far far away reflect issues that hit closer to home. He examines what they have to say about political oppression, authoritarianism, colonialism, discrimination, xenophobia, and perpetual war. Yet he also investigates subtler ways in which the personal is political within the multiverse, including its articulations of gender and sexuality, its cultural hierarchies of language use, and its complex relationships between humans, droids and myriad species. This book demonstrates that the Star Wars multiverse is not just a stage for thrilling interstellar battles, but also an exciting space for interpretation and discovery.

WALTER TANDY MURCH

Paintings and Drawings, 1925 – 1967

hardcover (USA)

publisher info:

contributors: George Lucas, Walter Scott Murch, Robert Storr,

Winslow Myers & Judy Collischan
foreword by George Lucas
hardcover (324 pages, featuring 350 color & b/w illustrations)

Rizzoli Electa

ISBN 978-0-84787-059-2
$ 85.00

solicitation copy:

The first complete monograph of artist Walter Tandy Murch explores the life of an unsung yet remarkable artist whose paintings and illustrations of everyday objects and mechanical devices are familiar yet mysterious, or as George Lucas puts it, “in a magical middle.”

Walter Tandy Murch (1907–1967) is best known for his enigmatic, dreamlike still life paintings of everyday objects and mechanical devices in a style that falls between Magic Realist, Surrealist, and Realist. This volume offers the most comprehensive collection of his work, including his striking commercial work for magazines and his paintings from the extensive collection of George Lucas.

Lucas calls himself a “fanboy” of Murch’s art—paintings and drawings he describes as simultaneously “functional and dreamy, simple and complicated; they are quiet yet grab your attention.” The tension of these opposing reactions draws viewers into Murch’s still lifes, which caught the attention of famed art dealer Betty Parsons, who also represented artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, and Agnes Martin. Murch showed his work at Parsons’s gallery for nearly thirty years.

With illuminating essays and extensive plates sections displaying Murch’s works, this celebration of an exceptionally talented and visionary artist is long overdue.

about the contributors:

– George Lucas is a film director, producer, screenwriter, and art collector.
– Walter Scott Murch is a writer and an Oscar-winning film editor and sound engineer.
– Robert Storr is a curator, critic, author, professor, and dean of the School of Art at Yale.
– Winslow Myers has taught art and art history for forty years, chairing the art department at the Bancroft School in Massachusetts.
– Judy Collischan is a curator, lecturer, writer, and professor of contemporary art.

ISBN 978-0-8143-4685-3

$ 92.99

softcover (320 pages)

ISBN 978-0-8143-4686-0

solicitation copy:

Our Blessed Rebel Queen: Essays on Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia is the first full-length exploration of Carrie Fisher’s career as actress, writer, and advocate. Fisher’s entangled relationship with the iconic Princess Leia is a focal point of this volume. Editors Linda Mizejewski and Tanya D. Zuk have assembled a collection that engages with the multiple interfaces between Fisher’s most famous character and her other life-giving work.

The contributors offer insights into Fisher as science-fiction idol, author, feminist inspiration, and Lucasfilm commodity. Jennifer M. Fogel examines the thorny “ownership” of Fisher’s image as a conflation of fan nostalgia, merchandise commodity, and eventually, feminist icon. Philipp Dominik Keidl looks at how Carrie Fisher and her iconic character are positioned within the male-centric history of Star Wars. Andrew Kemp-Wilcox researches the 2016 controversy over a virtual Princess Leia that emerged after Carrie Fisher’s death. Tanya D. Zuk investigates the use of Princess Leia and Carrie images during the Women’s March as memetic reconfigurations of historical propaganda to leverage political and fannish ideological positions. Linda Mizejewski explores Carrie Fisher’s autobiographical writing, while Ken Feil takes a look at Fisher’s playful blurring of truth and fiction in her screenplays. Kristen Anderson Wagner identifies Fisher’s use of humor and anger to challenge public expectations for older actresses. Cynthia Hoffner and Sejung Park highlight Fisher’s mental health advocacy, and Slade Kinnecott personalizes how Fisher’s candidness and guidance about mental health were especially cherished by those who lacked a support system in their own lives.

Our Blessed Rebel Queen is distinct in its interdisciplinary approach, drawing from a variety of methodologies and theoretical frameworks. Longtime fans of Carrie Fisher and her body of work will welcome this smart and thoughtful tribute to a multimedia legend.

from editor/contributor Tanya D. Zuk:

Our Blessed Rebel Queen: Essays on Carrie Fisher (Wayne State University Press, October 2021) is the first full-length exploration of Carrie Fisher’s career as actress, writer, and advocate The volume argues that Fisher’s legacy is inextricably linked to her performance of the iconic Princess Leia, to whom she has a complicated relationship. Editors Linda Mizejewski and Tanya D. Zuk have assembled a collection that engages with the multiple interfaces between Fisher’s most famous character and her other life-giving work. In addition to the co-authored introduction to the collection, I contributed an essay, “Carrie Fisher Sent Me: Gendered Political Protest, Princess Leia and the Women’s March.” This essay examines the use of Carrie Fisher’s image as Leia as a form of fan activism and memetic protest.

From widespread unemployment and mounting international hostilities to street fights in American cities between socialists and fascists, we are being swept backward in time to the political chaos of the 1930s.

Meanwhile, we are desperately searching for a magic vaccine to quell this raging fever before it consumes the entire world.

Author Stephen Kent has found an unlikely source of timeless wisdom, which is what we crave in this moment. The best part is, it’s been right under our noses the whole time: Star Wars.

What if we looked to Star Wars for more than just escapist entertainment? How the Force Can Fix the World: Lessons on Hope and Unity From a Galaxy Far, Far Away is about the core principles of the Star Wars franchise. These principles draw on four decades of blockbuster movies, comics, TV shows, books, and live entertainment that together form an exceptional arena of popular culture with universal appeal. Sitting at the intersection of political philosophy, self-help, and pop culture, these Star Wars principles, if applied to our lives, can improve our personal well-being, and our broken politics as well.

about the author:

Stephen Kent is a Washington D.C. political writer, TV commentator and PR professional. He is also the prolific podcaster behind the Beltway Banthas Podcast which boasts 120+ episodes and over 101,000 downloads since 2016.  As a formal contributor to the Washington Examiner, Stephen writes at the intersection of entertainment news and politics. His keen eye for the politics of pop culture has made Kent a recurring guest on Fox Business, The Glenn Beck Radio Program, Fox 5 DC, Spectrum News, Newsy and i24 News international.
