Among the top-grossing Hollywood blockbusters of all time, Star Wars launched one of the most successful movie and licensing franchises in history. Yet much of the film’s backstory was set in Britain, where the original trilogy was made and where early efforts at tie-in merchandising were spearheaded. The author provides a detailed account of the saga’s British connection, including personal recollections of fans in the UK, exclusive interviews with staff members of Palitoy who took on the challenge of producing millions of toys, and the story of how a group of writers from the underground press in London combined with Marvel comics to produce the first Star Wars expanded universe.

STAR WARS MEMORABILIA: AN UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO STAR WARS COLLECTABLES

softcover (non-licensed) (UK)

publisher info:

written by Paul Berry

softcover (94 pages)

Amberley Publishing

ISBN 978-1-44567-644-9

£ 14.99

solicitation copy:

Star Wars first debuted on movie screens in 1977 and over the past forty years has grown into a merchandising phenomenon unequalled both in breadth and range. It has generated more collectables than any other movie series in history. From inexpensive pocket money toys to big ticket full-size replicas, it has spanned every area of licensed product.

From inauspicious beginnings, Paul Berry charts the development of the Star Wars collectable from the Original Trilogy era of the 1970s and 1980s, the prequels of the 1990s and 2000s and the modern era of films. This book looks at the massive success of the Kenner, and later Hasbro, action figure range, which has spawned well over 1,000 figures; the story of the books and comics that have greatly expanded the Star Wars universe; the records and the videos; the bubblegum cards; and the modern collectors items.

Whether you joined the Star Wars saga in 1977, 1999 or 2015, Star Wars is a hobby that continues to attract new generations of collectors and will likely endure for many decades to come.

THE MILITARY SCIENCE OF STAR WARS

hardcover (non-licensed) (US)

publisher info:

written by George Beahm

Tor Books (Pan Macmillan Publishers)

hardcover (320 pages)

ISBN 978-1-2501-2474-6

$ 27.99

solicitation copy:

An in-depth, unofficial look at the military science of the Star Wars Universe. Includes a critical look at tactics, technology, and politics spanning each of the films within the series.

from the publisher:

The officially published books covering the Star Wars universe are necessarily general in nature. Written by pop culture writers, these books understandably lack the technical expertise that specialists in their respective fields can bring to bear in any discussion. Thus, there is a growing body of unofficial books written by specialists—philosophers, English professors, scientists, and, with this book, a military officer—that add unique insights about the Star Wars universe.

As a Star Wars fan who owns dozens of books published about the Star Wars universe and who happens to be a former major in the US Army Field Artillery, I see the military aspects of Star Wars in a way that a civilian unschooled in the operational arts cannot. I see how to plan, fight, and, afterward, critique battles with a critical eye and to apply those strategic and tactical lessons learned to future combat operations.
In other words, the civilians who have written official books have compiled useful encyclopedic texts and plot summaries, but for lack of specialized knowledge, they have generally been short on analysis.

For those reasons, I am not repeating what the official writers have covered. (Military personnel prefer not to retake the same ground twice.) I assume you are sufficiently familiar with the Star Wars movies that I need not cover well-trodden ground. Instead, my transformational use of subject matter from the Star Wars universe covers what the generalists hired to write the official books do not offer: analysis, speculation, and recommendations as they pertain to the operational arts. In other words, my impartial perspective, seasoned views unencumbered by outside influences, candid and often critical analyses.

The official writers chronicling the Star Wars universe have an important role to play—and so do unofficial writers, who bring fresh, new perspectives to the ongoing exploration of the Star Wars universe. Together, all of our books give a rounded and more comprehensive understanding of afictional world created by filmmaker George Lucas, which has amused, enlightened, and most of all, entertained us since 1977.

Watching Skies is a timely, personal and sharply observed reappraisal of the wave of late 70s/early 80s Hollywood movies that redefined the movie-going experience for Mark O’Connell and his generation of young cinephiles. From the untold magic (and fear) of an uncle’s VHS recording of Close Encounters of The Third Kind to childhood crushes on Christopher Reeve, bedroom remakes of Return of The Jedi, meeting Darth Vader in a department store, the profound trauma of losing every Star Wars figure on the island of Crete, and the terror of watching Poltergeist way too young, Watching Skies is about how Hollywood helped a kid from the frozen planet of Britain come to terms with a broken home and a lack of siblings, and how that 1980s Californian galaxy of BMX bikes, M&Ms, Atari arcade games and a backyard full of Star Wars toys was ultimately just too far, far away…
